CNN Coverage of Obama’s Inauguration Powered by Microsoft

January 21st, 2009

As the world witnessed, Barack Obama’s inauguration took place yesterday at Capitol Hill, Washington D.C. A lot of hard work and preparation was put into this ceremony. I have watched previous inaugurations but this one was more impressive than its precessors.

As most of the world, I have watched the event on CNN, and it’s coverage was really impressive. Besides the live coverage, they have provided cool previews such as Microsoft’s Photosynth of the inauguration, and satalite picture of the moment.

As you may already know, one of Microsoft Live Labs projects is Photosynth. For those do not already know, Photosynth is the product of combination of two technologies:

  1. Sandragon: A startup acquired by Microsoft in 2006,
  2. Photo Tourism: A unified research of Noah Snavely(University of Washington), Steve Seitz (University of Washington), and Richard Szeliski (Microsoft Research).

These are two different technologies in principle, but Microsoft Live Labs have combined them under one project: Photosynth. The result is quite impressive, as you have probably watched it on CNN. During the event, CNN has collected thousands of pictures from the crowd. With multiple point referencing, Photosynth has created a 3D browsable view of the event.
