Google Apps Email on BIS BlackBerry Accounts

February 8th, 2010

After a month of trial on Google Apps Premier Edition, about two months ago I have migrated my company’s daily services provided by MS Exchange 2007 Server to Google Apps. First of all I have to mention that I have chosen the Premier Edition for Google Apps due to its massive storage per account of 25 GB dataspace and seemless integration to BlackBerry, which is held by every one of our employees.

With this migration, we no longer needed our Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) accounts so we have switched to BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) for all BlackBerry accounts.

Email Integration:

Well all is simple as 1, 2 and 3 as directed by email account setup on your BlackBerry devices or the self-service site provided by your ISP, but one major trick is the Postini Service provided by Google Apps. Postini Service is exclusive to Premier Edition of Google Apps and provides additional message security features for Google Apps Mail service.

Here is the trick: If you have this service enabled, you may not be able to add your domain email address to your BIS account, thus we recommend turning this service off and switch back to previous mail DNS records for your MX entries. Once you do this, it takes around 30 minutes to update the Google Apps services, after that you would be able to add your domain mail address to your BIS accounts.  I cannot tell much about the BES accounts, but before switching we had no problems.

Your typical mail server address would be: imap.gmail.com. Use your email address of your domain as your username.

Contacts and Calendar Integration:

The solution is out there available under the Domain Management of Google Apps. You need to enable the Google Sync Application permission to all your accounts under Service Setting > Mobile > Google Sync.

You can directly download google sync for blackberry devices at http://m.google.com/sync. From our experience we recommend that you have your device up-to-date for its platform, or you the application my freeze upon connection.

That’s about it. If you have any questions on this matter please feel free to contact me.
